Mangochi and Blantyre District Health Management Teams (DHMTs) have given YONECO a nod to commence the implementation of Tithetse Cholera Project in their respective areas between February and August 2023.

Malawi is currently battling a prolonged cholera outbreak since March 2022 which has claimed over 1, 200 lives out of about 36, 943 cases that have been registered so far. Health experts and authorities have described the outbreak as the worst to have affected the country in two decades. On 13 February 2023, the president of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Dr. Lazurus Chakwera presided over the launch of a national campaign to end cholera at a function that was held at Mgona in Lilongwe.

Thus, in a bid to complement the government’s efforts to contain the disease, YONECO has secured funding from the Network for Empowered Aid Response (NEAR) to contribute towards cholera prevention and response interventions in Blantyre and Mangochi.

Specifically, Tithetse Cholera Project will focus on procurement and distribution of items for prevention and response to Cholera like chlorine, cannulas, and gloves. Furthermore, other activities under the project will concentrate on promoting Social Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) to equip the communities with adequate knowledge on prevention of cholera.

DHMTs are responsible for the overall coordination, planning, and monitoring of health services at district level. Thus, the teams in the two targeted districts welcomed the project with a call for rapid response and implementation.
